The Battle of Carthage was a fight that deserves to be discovered by readers of Civil War history. The action was part of Lyon's key 1861 campaign to rid Missouri of its Southern element. The plan nearly succeeded, but began to unravel with the Federal defeat at Carthage. Hopefully the book has focused attention on some of the smaller battles of the time period, while not as bloody, played a critical role in the strategic outcome of America's great struggle. The characters in the book were some of the most unique leaders in the Civil War period. Many of them were Mexican War lower grade officers who now found themselves serving as generals in key decision main positions in this new war. Some of these men responded well to their new rank during the fighting at Carthage, while many others struggled in their leadership roles. The early portion of the Civil War has been neglected by many students of the period. The military situation, the soldiers and the leaders struggled to make sense of the conflict. The men were green to combat and the size of the armies were considerably smaller than in later battles, but the heat of the action proved to be just as intense as later in the war. Despite their rawness, both armies at Carthage fought well during the day long struggle, and names such as Dry Fork Creek and Ordnuff Hill became landmarks where men died for their beliefs.
