Until now very little has been written about the important early Civil War Battle of Carthage. David Hinze and Karen Farnham have produced the first book on this influential engagement. When Federal officer Nathaniel Lyon captured the ammunition packed arsenal in St. Louis, he forced the gathering pro-Southerners to fall back west along the Missouri River. The states Governor, Claiborne F. Jackson hastily formed militia units to defeat the despised Federals. After his defeat at Boonville, Jackson withdrew his Missouri State Guard south in two columns to avoid being trapped a destroyed in the northern part of the state. In a bold campaign designed to smash the Missouri State Guard, Lyon moved against Jackson from the north while a second column drove southwest from St. Louis to cut off the withdrawing Rebels. This second wing was spearheaded by the impetuous Franz Sigel, who found Jackson’s army on the morning of July 5, 1861. |
