War Between the States

...The quiet muggy stillness of the morning was shattered when Federal pickets opened fire in the distance. Federal Colonel Franz Sigel spurred his horse forward to determine the cause of the commotion. In the distance he could see homespun-clad Southern horsemen attempting to contest the advance of his column... A milling mass of Southerners was taking up a position on the crest of a ridge about one mile to the north. To the confident well-drilled Federals they appeared as a motely collection of men fielding a few pieces of artillery while struggling to align themselves for battle.
After marching blindly through the state, the German colonel had finally found his enemy. Now, perhaps, he would also find the glory and fame he felt he so justly deserved.
