Presentation Topics
The following are speeches that I have given in the past at a variety of Civil War venues. Presentations can also be custom developed for your special group. These remarks can be
altered to fit a keynote address, Roundtable meeting, after dinner speech or in a conference setting.
The Battle of Carthage
July 5, 1861
Border War in Southwest Missouri
---The South's First Victory
This speech is drawn from highlights in the book. It primarily focuses on why the battle occurred and the key parts of the fighting on July 5, 1861. The speech summerizes the impact of the battle on future
events early in the war. Map package provided to the audience as well as a summary of events in Missouri.
"Hold your position at all Hazards,"
---General Benjamin M. Prentiss in the Hornet's Nest at Shiloh
This presentation traces the early events at the Battle of Shiloh that led to the development of the Union position known as the Hornet's Nest. The speech primarily focuses on Prentiss' decisions and the hard fighting by both sides.
The speech presents both sides of the fighting and makes some surprising analysis of the Hornet's Nest and why it was not defeated until after 5:00 p.m. Map package available to the audience.
A Rising Star In the Middle of Despair:
General A.P. Stewart and the Atlanta Campaign.
This lecture will focus on the rise of little known General A.P. Stewart to corps command in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. While the Atlanta campaign was a disaster for the Southerners it was time for Stewart to personally display
his abilities. In the thick of most of the severe fighting during the campaign, Stewart ended the yearin command of Polk's old corps and displayed remarkable skill. This presentation follows Stewart and his men through the fighting and attempts to understand why he was
elevated to corps command over others. Map and chronology handouts are available for the audience.
Artillery Hell: A Study of Artillery at the Battle of Antietam
This presentation examines the fighting on America's bloodiest day as an artillery battle, not as it is usually presented in the context of solely an infantry engagement. The presentation explains why artillery played such a significant role on the Antietam
Battlefield and in many instances saved the Southerners from a stunning defeat. Map package available to the audience.
From Clerk to Colonel: The Early Civil War
Years of Phillip Sheridan
This lecture examines Sheridan's early tumultuous career and pinpointed the leadership qualities developing in the young soldier that marked him as a man on the rise in the Union Army. Were there traits that showed Sheridan would rise to the top levels of army command,
or did Sheridan's charisma and leadership skills develop late in the war? Maps available and photo's available for the audience.
Missouri Civil War Personalities: Examining Generals,
Women, Scoundrels and just plain folks.
This presentation examines the people who made Missouri one of the extremely interesting places in the early portion of the Civil War. A light speech, full of ancedotes and some gossip. It is great for audiences just getting interested in the war.
An Examination of Civil War Leadership in Missouri---
Between The Battle of Carthage and Wilson's Creek.
This lecture defines leadership and examines how four leaders in Southwest Missouri struggled during the 36 days between the fighting in the region. The presentation places the leadership skills of Ban McCulloch, Sterling Price, Nathaniel Lyon and Franz Sigel under
a microscope. This speech is critical of all and praiseworthy of just a few.
