The Battle of Shiloh
April 27 & 28, 2001

Tour led by David C. Hinze and Thomas Y. Cartwright. One of the few tours that covers both days of fighting in detail. Side trip to Savannah, TN to visit the Cherry Mansion, Grant's Headquarters. Based out of Corinth, MS. Price: $299

Early on April 6th, 1862 two titan armies clashed in the underbrush and broken ground near a log church named Shiloh. The two combatants slugged at one another for two long days until silence returned to the small fields cut from the woody countryside. The fighting near the steamboat landing changed much in the heartland of the Confederacy.

This tour examines the fighting in Shiloh in detail. We will visit the sites of the opening volleys and walk through the torn Federal camps. We will spend considerable time tracing the Southern troops advance against Sherman and development of the Hornets Nest. On the eastern side of the field we will study Johnston's death site and see how the collapse of the Federal left would bring the South within site of their victory. We will walk past Grant's last line of artillery, and study the wide variety of artillery pieces on display. Finally we will discuss the timely arrival of Buell's army, as the Hornets Nest surrendered.

Besides visiting the key locations of the fighting of April 6th, we will also study the crucial actions on the following day. We start with a discussion of Beauregard's possible errors, and examine the locations where the battle surged across the first day's landmarks. Our group will learn about the key landmarks and units that fought so valiantly on the second day of fighting.

But Shiloh is more than walking the field and reading monuments. Shiloh is about the stories of the courageous men on both sides from all the ranks. From Col. Peabody in blue, to Gen. Cleburne in gray, and all the enlisted men's heroic stories. Their antecdotes celebrate the pain, agony, and out-right terror of close range combat. Careers were made and destroyed on this field, and a touching love story reached its sad conclusion.
Come join us honoring the men who fought on this ground. Learn their stories and understand just why this battlefield and the men who fought here are so special. If you see just one western battlefield this is the place for you! We invite you to spend a weekend on one of the most unspoiled Civil War battlefields. Great people, fun and memorable stories will make a grand weekend!

Four days and three fun-filled nights will give you a "taste" of Missouri's past and future. We will depart from the Gateway City of St. Louis and proceed to tour our way across the state to Kansas City and back again. Our goal is to familiarize you with some of Missouri's most famous places, and many you will not realize exist within its boundaries. From up scale to down home we will experience a slice of Missouri.

During the tour there will be food aplenty. We will visit many of the cultures that have added their backgrounds to Missouri's past. This is a tour that everyone who is curious about how we came to be or just loves sampling different foods will enjoy. Call, write, or e-mail us for a more detailed itinerary and pricing.
